ldms_core now deletes SLM products

Posted by Jack Coates on Dec 2, 2008 6:45:50 PM

Version 3.2.6 is now uploaded to http://www.droppedpackets.org/scripts/ldms_core.

As the next step in its ongoing quest to delete data that was automatically gathered and then left to rot, ldms_core will now delete automatically gathered SLM products that have no installations (note that this is not USAGE, but INSTALLS).

It is possible that this can produce churn in situations where products are being installed and uninstalled in rapid succession; this should be a minor problem compared to the database performance degradation that results from thousands of junk product definitions.

As is usual with new features, this needs testing; please give it a whirl on your test server before trying it on production. At the very least, have a database backup handy.

Jack,

I've installed the latest and it's working great if I run it manually.  On an earlier post you mentioned "I've asked the user to create a Windows scheduled task" and issues with tasks.

What permissions does the account need to run this task?  Scheduled tasks fail every time (0x9).

Any ideas?

Thanks for a great tool.

Tim

Hi,

There's a few potential bugs around working directory; for instance, when running as a LANDesk task, the working directory will be system32... probably the best thing to do in the short term is to search for ldms_core log files and/or look in the event viewer for errors.

3.2.8 has just been uploaded, thanks to all who helped with debugging and ideas. There've been some fixes to email handling, and the SLM product culling no longer attempts to delete products that are in compliance groups (note that it never successfully deleted products you were managing compliance for, but it would try).

I should also point out that the LDMS Console doesn't reflect the changes until you close the Software License Monitoring component and re-open it; refresh does not reload the product list from the database.
