Problem

Remote Controlling a machine returns the error: "Unable to establish a secure session with the remote computer (-5)”.

Resolution

Four possible solutions.

1. Log into the OS with a user that has Remote Control rights. Remote Control authenticates with the user logged into the Windows Operating System (Not the user logged into LANDesk Console).

2. On the core server, open Administrative Tools | Component Services | Component Services | Computers | My Computer | COM+ Applications | LANDesk (and LANDesk1). Right click the object and click on Properties. Click the "Advanced" tab, and select the "Leave running when Idle" radio button. This will prevent the COM+ object from shutting down after it starts and resolve the issue.

3. The LANDesk1 COM+ Application on the Core Server needs to be set up with a user that has sufficient rights in Active Directory, such as a Domain Administrator account. This has to be done if there are AD groups in the LANDesk Management Suite group that need to be enumerated.

4. The .NET 1.1 installation may be corrupt or is not properly registered with IIS. Reregister ASP.NET 1.1 with IIS by executing the following: “%SystemRoot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.exe –i”

Note: If later versions of the .NET Framework (2.0 and 3.0) were installed and removed, it may be necessary to re-install one or more of the later versions before re-registering 1.1 with IIS.
