Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

I want to upgrade my 8.7 version to 8.8.  Should I do a fresh install or upgrade?  I have backed up the core server and the database server. The core is running window 2003 server and the database is running window 2000 sp4 sql. They are on seprate boxes.  I would prefer to do a upgrade that way I want lose any of the settings.  I am very new to landesk.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

Sidney,

I think you are exactly right... do the upgrade and if anything goes wrong, contact tech support.

In fact, the support rep that discussed the upgrade with us at the Denver LANDesk User Group let us know how important it was to call first, rather than try to fix things and THEN call.

Also, he mentioned that the installer is much better in terms of knowing what step it's on, why things didn't go right and where to pick up again when the underlying problem was fixed.  I found this to be very true- they broke the install up into chunks and you could see it finish each step.

Also new was the wizard that walked me through all of the prerequisites.   It will tell you what needs to happen for a successful install and, once you do that, you should be home free.

I did the upgrade from 8.7 SP5 to 8.8 SP1 in about an hour, then ran a test to make sure everything was working well... then since it worked so well we went ahead and upgraded to LD 8.8 SP2.   Once afternoon's worth of work...

Just my experience... but good luck and if you are ready, go for it!

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

Today we did an upgrade from LDMS 8.7 SP5 to LDMS 8.8 SP2 with our reseller.

After the installation we had some errors!

- we couldn´t create a bare metal server

- the webconsole couldn´t be launched

- a lot of PXE, Provisioning issues

- Launchapd, Powermanagement, Inventory, SWdeployment, remote controle and all other products seemed to be OK

----------------

We did an database - restore and rolled back the last virtual snapshot of the Landesk Coreserver

In two weeks we will try a fresh installation!

I hope it will work ( wish me luck )

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

the installation went through with no errors!

1) upgrade to LDMS 8.8

2) installation of SP2

Yes,      After the process we checked all products and found those issues! ( Bare metal, Provisioning, web console)

(maybe there are some more problems we didn´t regognized)

Yes, now we are back on 8.7 SP5 with the database from yesterday!

I hope a fresh installation will work!

I don´t feel anything       I have no choise!  the upgrade failed!

Brief upgrade comments attached.

Upgraded from 8.7 sp3 to 8.8 sp2.

All went well except for existing admin consoles.  Participating in josh's PATCH evaluation for Policies not appearing in LSD portal

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

- we couldn´t create a bare metal server

There should be a log in the Managementsuite\log directory. That will help indicate the cause.

However, it is probably not an upgrade issue but a known issue that has a Post SP2 patch.  Which means you will probably see this on your clean install as well.

Contact support for patch: PRV-928388.2

- the webconsole couldn´t be launched

The install recreates the COM+ Applications, so the LANDesk1 COM+ Application Identity is reset to default.  The install tells you this and tells you to reconfigure it.  Did you do reconfigure this identity to be a domain account?  If not, then that is all you needed to do.

- a lot of PXE, Provisioning issues

You should elaboate.  Maybe post the errors in the OSD section.

Did you backup your WinPE image?  Cause we will overwrite yours with the one from the 8.8 install.  I am not sure if we back it up for you.

Did you add the drivers you have added to your old WinPE image to the new 8.8 WinPE image?

Did you redeploy your PXE Reps?

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

- some Logs were empty, some logs gave us an error

our reseller saved them and will show them to landesk

- yes, we configured the COM+ Identity!

- yes, we saved all files and drivers and we redeployed the pxe Rep.! But the boot-image didn´t load!

the client found the pxe-server, but didn´t start to download the image!

On Monday next week we will try the fresh installation! I will post our achievment!

thanks for your help!

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

Hi Thomas,

Were you remoted into the vmware machine? I have seen a few instances where there was an issue with RDPing the core or  RDPing to the VM host or connecting to the VM host with VMWorkstation and the installation not using session 0 and creating empty logs.

The way I got around this was to create a free account  on www.logmein.com and installed the plugin on the core server temporarily and used the website to connect to the core and upgrade. Since www.logmein.com is all java based it doesn't affect LANDesk like RDP with session 0 does or VMWorkstation.

Good luck!

Re: Upgrade 8.7 to 8.8 LanDesk

Hi @ all!

the fresh installation caused us the same problems like the upgrade did!

But we found solutions for all of our issues!

- the Provisioning didn´t work well ( no PXE found, not able to create Bare Metal Server, ...)

     solution:   Installing Patch PRV-928338.2

- the webconsole didn´t start (couldn´t validate user)

     solution:   1) DB-migration to local SQL 2005  (we used a SQL 2000 SP3 database)

                    2) proxy-configuration, so that the browser didn´t use the proxy when you type in the core-server

( we use a *.pac file for the Proxy-configuration)

Now I am happy with the new 8.8 SP2 version!
