Console Add-on: LANDesk Support Tools Beta 3/4

Posted by rhyous on Feb 27, 2009 10:44:01 PM

Hey all,

I got some good things coming in my next version.  Sorry, it isn't ready yet, but it is getting better...

In Beta 3, which I posted to the Community article already without a blog post, I really only added VNC Viewer so Linux nodes can be remote controlled.  If you forgot where to download it...here is the link.

Console Add-on: LANDesk Support Tools

In beta 4, I have stopped using cxExtender.dll and am now using my own SupportTools.dll.  I needed more abilities than the basic sample could give me. So I am adding a bunch of different features to it.

Here is a screenshot of the new version.

So as you see, I have to break the tools out into multiple groups:

  • LANDesk Tools
  • Remote Control Tools
  • Windows Tools

Send Message

I am also working on a "Send Message" option.  It connects to the remote computer using the LANDesk agent and remote executes a command that calls Microsoft's msg.exe switch to show a message.  I am adding it because I was never satisfied with the other solution I created.  However, I am not satisfied with Microsoft's msg.exe either.  I was hoping not to have to create a file that has to deployed to all the clients, so I am settling for msg.exe.  If any of you know a better way to remote execute a popup message without putting a file on the client, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Windows Vista/2008 - Enable RPC

The name really is misleading.  It is not enabling RPC, but adding an exception through the Vista firewall, I will come up with a better name.  I am looking for a command that does enable RPC if disabled as well. I haven't figure out a way to either enable RPC or add a firewall exception for RPC to XP yet.

Here is a good site for allowing RPC to XP using a GPO.

That's hot, I'm going to look around for some kind of universal messaging agent (so you can message regardless of platform.)

Sorry...I fixed it.

I just noticed that the link is still working but points to Beta 2; am I missing something or did you reuse the filename?

thanks for fixing the link, i followed it and downloaded beta 3 it appears, how do i get beta 4?

Mar 5, 2009 5:04 PM rhyous rhyous    says in response to spastic_toad:

4 is going to be skipped because it had incomplete code.  I saved it off as beta 4 but then I didn't want to release it just yet because it has drastic changes the installer didn't handle and so I have to fix the installer, which I am doing in beta 5.  So as soon as beta 5 is done, I will release it...but you will never see beta 4.

Jared,

Love the tools, I have noticed though an issue I am not sure if you can address.  We use the "best practice" of logging into our desktops as a non-admin, then we do a "run-as" to launch the console and when logging into to console itself we also use an admin account. (The admin account is needed so that you can use R/C without credential pop-ups)

The issue is your tools use the currently logged in users creds, not the creds of the account that launched the console.

Any help?

Does this happen with all the tools (the tools on the Tools Menu and the tools that show up when your right-click on All Devices?

Mar 12, 2009 9:59 AM James Marriott James Marriott    says in response to rhyous:

This is when I right click on a computer and try to open the C$, get login name, etc.  If my non-privileged account is a local admin on a computer it works, but if not, it does not.

Mar 12, 2009 11:15 AM rhyous rhyous    says in response to James Marriott:

I checked this out.

If I am logged in as User X, but open the Console using a Run as User Y, then everything I launch is launched as User Y.  Explorer is first launched as User Y (this can be seen in Windows Task Manager if you run Task Manager as an administrator) but then it is unable to pass the users credentials, fails, and prompts for a username and password, at which point explorer is now running as the user logged into the OS instead of the Console user.

The same thing happens if I open a command prompt as User Y and run  the command:
explorer.exe \\computer\c$

So this appears to be a problem with Explorer and appears limited to Explorer.

I will seek a workaround, because this is definitely not something I can change.
